Perry is born July 25, 1968 in Chicago in Illinois. She was the daughter of Laurie Metcalf Perry and Jeff Perry. In the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as seen by flashback), her mother played Jackie Harris in two of Perry's first TV roles. The actress did not go on to explore acting as a profession after reaching adulthood, as her parents were afraid of the negative impact stress might have. Perry said that she was nervous to be an actor during high school, but started doing shows in theater classes at Northwestern University as a way to connect with people following her transfer to the university from Boston University. Perry following her graduation from Boston University, relocated into New York in search of television roles. She landed small parts in shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. But, her home-sickness brought her back to California for theater roles. In 2013 she performed in The Other Place on Broadway alongside her mother. She performed with their father Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in the year 2015 in the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry appeared in 9 episodes of ABC's thriller The Family during 2016. Her father portrayed her in her role on the ABC Drama Scandal. The same year, she portrayed a child version of Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory) as her mother in a youthful version. Despite the fact that she has a connection with her family to the character she got the role via an audition.
